The Scope of Practice for the Advanced EMT include:

• Administration of glucagon for hypoglycemia: Glucagon may be administered via IM, SC, IV, IO or intranasal routes as approved by the local EMS Medical Director.
• Administration of SL nitroglycerine to a patient experiencing chest pain of a suspected ischemic origin: Includes oral glucose for hypoglycemia and aspirin for chest pain of suspected ischemic origin.
• Parenteral administration of epinephrine for anaphylaxis;  EMTs and EMT-Is may only administer epinephrine via an autoinjector; AEMTs may prepare and administer epinephrine via IM or SC routes
• Administration of a narcotic antagonist to a patient of suspected narcotic overdose

Administration of nitrous oxide (50% mixture) for pain relief

Obtaining peripheral venous blood specimens; This is either through direct venipuncture or through an existing IV catheter.

• Peripheral IV insertion and maintenance; incudes removal as needed; This includes placement of an INT/saline lock. Peripheral lines include external jugular veins, but does not include placement of umbilical catheters.

Intraosseus device insertion; includes removal as needed; This includes placement in both adult and pediatric patients.

BIAD (blind insertion airway device) insertion; This would also permit the removal of a BIAD under medically appropriate circumstances for the specific levels. EMT-Is and AEMTs are limited to the insertion of devices not intended to be placed into trachea.

Tracheobronchial suctioning; AEMTs are limited to tracheobronchial suctioning of patients with pre-established airways.

Prerequisite – EMT

Individuals applying for Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) certification must meet the following requirements:

• 18 years of age or older.
• Possess current National Certification at the EMT level or a current state license at the EMT level or higher.
• Successful completion of a state-approved Advanced Emergency Medical Technician course that meets or exceeds the National EMS Education Standards for the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. You must have completed the course within the past two years. Your Program Director must verify your successful completion of the course on the NREMT website.If your initial Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) educational program was completed more than two years ago and you are currently state licensed at the AEMT level, you must submit documentation verifying completion of a state-approved AEMT refresher course or 36 hours of equivalent continuing education covering the mandatory and flexible core content topics specified within the past two years. If you are not currently state licensed as an AEMT and it has been more than two years from the completion of your AEMT course, you must complete an entire state-approved AEMT course prior to applying for National Certification.
• Verification from the Program Director that you hold a current CPR-BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent credential and have demonstrated competence in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) skills.
